Certifications — what they actually mean
03 . Magnesium is one of the most under-consumed minerals — and form matters as much as dose
Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body — from energy production to muscle function to sleep. Yet The Lancet Global Health surveys show 2.4 billion people (~31%) had inadequate magnesium intake. The form of magnesium matters too: not all forms are equally well tolerated or absorbed.

NIH ODS Magnesium Fact Sheet · Walker et al., Magnesium Research, 2003
"The form of magnesium matters – glycinate is highly absorbable and gentler on the stomach compared to inorganic forms like magnesium oxide, providing a more comfortable experience."
04 . What's inside — the ingredient and why this form
1,000mg
Magnesium Glycinate compoundper serving (2 capsules)= 200mg elemental magnesium*
Magnesium Bisglycinate(also called Magnesium Glycinate)
Magnesium glycinate and magnesium bisglycinate are the same compound — magnesium bonded to two molecules of the amino acid glycine (C₄H₈MgN₂O₄). "Bisglycinate" is the technically correct name; "glycinate" is the commercial shorthand. Both refer to the same chelated form.
The chelation means magnesium is absorbed partly through the intestinal amino acid transport pathway rather than solely through the ion-channel pathway used by inorganic salts (oxide, chloride, sulphate). This is the mechanism behind its improved gastric tolerance — less residual osmotic load in the colon means less risk of loose stools compared to magnesium oxide at equivalent elemental doses.
Bioavailability versus oxide: In a 60-day double-blind study, the amino acid chelate form produced higher 24-hour urinary magnesium excretion than magnesium oxide. Since urinary magnesium reflects magnesium that has been absorbed into circulation and subsequently regulated by the kidneys, this indicate greater bioavailability of the amino acid chelate form compared with magnesium oxide.
Glycinate's primary advantage is GI tolerability. It is the most practical form for daily consistent use - particularly for evening sleep support where GI discomfort is especially unwelcome.

05 . Key benefits — what current human clinical evidence shows

Sleep quality support
A 2025 double-blind placebo-controlled RCT in 155 adults with self-reported poor sleep found 250mg/day of magnesium bisglycinate significantly improved Insomnia Severity Index scores vs placebo at 4 weeks (p=0.049). Effect was greater in those with lower baseline dietary magnesium intake.
Schuster et al., Nature and Science of Sleep, 2025

Supports normal psychological function and relaxation
Research shows a consistent link between magnesium status and anxiety levels. A systematic review of 18 studies found that magnesium supplementation produced positive effects on anxiety and stress in vulnerable populations — supports its role as a natural aid for daily stress management.
Boyle et al., Nutrients, 2017

Normal energy metabolism
Magnesium is a required cofactor for ATP synthesis and energy production. When magnesium levels fall short, the energy production process breaks down, leading to fatigue, weakness and reduced physical performance. Its involvement in over 300 enzymatic reactions makes magnesium one of the body's most indispensable minerals for sustained energy and physical function.
NIH ODS Magnesium Health Professional Fact Sheet

Contributes to normal muscle function and bone maintenance
Magnesium is essential for normal muscle function — supporting calcium antagonism and neuromuscular signalling that keep muscles working properly. It also plays a direct structural role in maintaining healthy bones and teeth, with the majority of the body's magnesium stored in the skeletal system. Recognised by EFSA and NIH as established structure-function relationships.

06 . Why Jia formulated it this way

Jia

"I actually made this one mainly for myself! My stress levels are super duper high, and I’ve struggled with chronic insomnia for over a decade before I finally decided to try magnesium on myself. To be honest, I'm a really doubtful person when it comes to supplements. I read so many clinical trials and do so much myth-busting that I go in expecting most things to do nothing immediately, so I was genuinely shocked at how well and quickly this worked for me.
My main issue was falling asleep. I could lie in bed for 2 to 4 hours wide awake even when I was completely exhausted because I have so many ideas just trying to burst out. And even when I do fall asleep, it’s easy for me to wake up in just two hours or so. The frustrating part is that as a lifestyle medicine practitioner, my sleep hygiene is genuinely excellent: a proper 1 hour pre-sleep wind-down routine with low lights, a shower, no screens, no talking, straight to bed at consistent times. I do everything "right" and still couldn't sleep. That was my reality until I started taking magnesium.
The funny thing is I manufacture magnesium supplements but I'm just a hopelessly lazy supplement taker myself. It took me an embarrassingly long time to actually try it, haha! But once I did... voila! It's been such a help calming my racing thoughts before bed and letting me actually fall asleep, and I've stopped waking up in the middle of the night (the only exception being my naughty kitties deciding 4am is playtime).
Here's why I rate it so highly beyond my own experience: magnesium is one of the most science-backed supplements out there, with over 130,000 published articles on PubMed. It has an excellent safety profile, it's an essential mineral, and most people simply don't get enough of it through diet alone. If I could only take one supplement for the rest of my life, magnesium would be my pick, no contest.
This specific formula is fully chelated magnesium glycinate, buffered with around 15% magnesium oxide to efficiently deliver 200mg of elemental magnesium per 2-capsule serving. The glycinate form is gentle on the stomach and well absorbed, and the small oxide buffer lets us keep the dose and cost efficient without bulking it out into a handful of pills. Every batch is third-party lab tested before it leaves our facility, same as all our products.
Thank you for all your love so far!"
07 . Magnesium — very different form and tolerability
20%
Magnesium oxide contains about 60% elemental magnesium by weight, while our magnesium glycinate contains around 20%. However, more elemental magnesium does not necessarily mean better absorption. In a 60-day clinical study, amino-acid chelated magnesium showed higher urinary magnesium levels, indicating greater absorption. As a chelated form, magnesium glycinate is generally better absorbed and utilized by the body despite its lower elemental magnesium content.
| WHAT TO CHECK | OTHER BRANDS (MAGNESIUM OXIDE) | ESTALIFE MAGNESIUM GLYCINATE | WHY IT MATTERS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form | Magnesium oxide (most common) | Magnesium bisglycinate (chelated and buffered) | Chelated forms show higher urinary Mg excretion than oxide in a 60-day double-blind human RCT, indicating better absorption (Walker 2003). Buffered magnesium has higher elemental magnesium per capsule. |
| GI tolerability | Osmotic laxative effect common at higher doses | Well-tolerated — designed for daily evening use | Osmotic load from oxide reaches the colon and causes loose stools. Chelated absorption through amino acid pathway reduces this effect. |
| Sleep-specific evidence | oxide-specific RCT | 2025 double-blind RCT using bisglycinate specifically | Schuster 2025 used magnesium bisglycinate and showed significant Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) improvement. |
| Elemental magnesium | High (60% elemental) | 200mg (20% elemental) | Glycinate delivers less elemental Mg but offers better GI tolerance, and current evidence suggests better absorption than oxide. |
| Capsule type | Often gelatin | Vegetarian cellulose (HPMC) — vegan | Suitable for vegetarians, vegans, and those avoiding animal-derived products. |
| Price per bottle | $25–$58 | $13.99 | We own our own factory and sell directly to you. No distributor or retailer markups. |
08 . What to expect — a realistic timeline based on published RCT data
All timelines reflect findings from published human RCTs. Individual experience will vary based on dietary magnesium intake, health status, and consistency of use.
Day 1–7
Absorption begins
Magnesium absorption and distribution begin after intake, but most people should not expect an immediate "sleeping pill"/ "pain reliever" effect. Magnesium works as an essential mineral involved in normal nerve, muscle, and energy-related functions, so support is usually gradual rather than instant.
Walker et al., Magnesium Research, 2003
Week 2-4
Sleep support — your primary evidence
A meta-analysis of 3 magnesium RCTs found sleep onset latency reduced by 17.36 minutes on average compared to placebo in older adults with insomnia — a statistically significant finding (p=0.0006). The authors noted that while the evidence is promising, all included trials were rated at moderate-to-high risk of bias, highlighting the need for higher-quality research.
Mah & Pitre, BMC Complement Med Ther, 2021
Week 4-8
Sleep quality improvement — where human data is stronger
A gap addressed by the 2025 bisglycinate-specific RCT which confirmed significant sleep improvements in healthy adults with a more robust study design. The study found a significant improvement in Insomnia Severity Index scores versus placebo after 4 weeks (p=0.049). Participants with lower magnesium intake at the start of the study appeared to experience greater benefits from supplementation.
Schuster et al., Nat Sci Sleep, 2025
Month 2+
Sustained sleep support, energy, and muscle function
Month 2 and beyond is where magnesium glycinate earns its place as a daily essential. Consistent supplementation supports sleep quality, muscle function, and energy levels. These are not immediate effects, but cumulative benefits that strengthen with daily use.
Tarsitano et al., Journal of Translational Medicine, 2024; Souza et al., Nutrients, 2023
Individual results vary. These timelines reflect published clinical data — not a guarantee. Effects are most consistently demonstrated in individuals with lower baseline dietary magnesium intake. People already meeting the dietary magnesium RDA through food may see less measurable change from supplementation.
09 . How to take it
2 capsules daily. For sleep support, take preferably 30–60 minutes before bedtime. May be taken with or without food.
2
Take 30–60 minutes before bed for sleep support. Magnesium glycinate's GI tolerability makes evening use practical without the discomfort risk of oxide forms.
3
Can be taken with or without food. If you experience any stomach sensitivity, taking with a light meal helps most users.
4
Continue for at least 4 weeks before assessing sleep effects — this was the minimum duration in the published bisglycinate sleep RCT (Schuster 2025).
Consult your doctor before use if you have kidney disease, heart block, myasthenia gravis, or other neuromuscular disorders. Magnesium may interact with certain antibiotics (tetracyclines, quinolones), bisphosphonates— separate dosing by at least 2-4 hours. Certain diuretics and long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can reduce magnesium levels in the body. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a healthcare professional. Or take as directed by a healthcare professional. Store in a cool and dry place.
