🌟Why astaxanthin is considered an especially potent antioxidant
Astaxanthin is a red-orange carotenoid produced by the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, the same pigment that gives wild salmon and krill their colour. A 2007 laboratory study measured how efficiently a range of common antioxidants neutralise singlet oxygen, a highly reactive form of oxygen generated by UV exposure and normal cellular activity, which damages lipids, proteins, and DNA. The researchers found astaxanthin quenched singlet oxygen roughly 6,000 times more efficiently than vitamin C and around 1,500 times more efficiently than lutein, with astaxanthin showing the strongest activity among every compound tested [1].  Besides, astaxanthin molecular structure allows it sit across the entire width of a cell membrane, rather than staying confined to one side, which is part of why researchers have studied it in tissues that are hard for many antioxidants to meaningfully reach, including the eye and the deeper layers of skin.

🌟Why 6mg
A dedicated dose-finding study in healthy volunteers identified 6mg per day as the point at which measurable improvements in eye accommodation and eye strain became consistent, with doses above that adding little further benefit. This product's 6mg-per-capsule dose sits directly at that identified level, and the label's 1 to 2 capsule range covers both a standard 6mg dose and a higher 12mg dose for those who want it.

🌟Why Haematococcus pluvialis
Haematococcus pluvialis is the most extensively studied natural source of astaxanthin, used in the majority of the human clinical trials. Astaxanthin from this algae is not something the body produces on its own, so supplementation or a diet rich in wild salmon or krill are the only ways to raise levels.

🌟Key Benefits
1. Provides antioxidant support
Every day, your body is exposed to unstable molecules that can damage cells over time. Antioxidants help protect your cells by neutralising these molecules. Astaxanthin is one type of antioxidant. A study took fluid samples from 35 people's eyes, comparing each person's own eye before and after they took 6mg of astaxanthin daily for 2 weeks. After taking it, the eye's natural antioxidant activity went up, and signs of oxidative damage went down, both by a significant amount [2].

2. Supports healthy eye function
If you spend long hours looking at a screen, your eyes have to keep refocusing, and that gets tiring over time. In a controlled study, the group taking astaxanthin showed a real improvement in how well their eyes could refocus, along with less reported eye strain, compared to the group taking a placebo [3].

3. Supports skin health
Skin naturally loses elasticity and moisture over time, partly due to the same oxidative stress antioxidants help manage. To see if astaxanthin makes a difference, researchers gave one group of 36 healthy men 6mg of astaxanthin a day, as a capsule only, nothing applied to the skin, for 6 weeks. Compared to the placebo group, their skin showed less wrinkle depth, better elasticity, and held on to moisture better [4]. A larger review that pooled together 9 separate studies on astaxanthin and skin confirmed the moisture and elasticity improvements were consistent [5].

🌟Directions of Use
Take 1-2 capsules daily with any meal containing healthy fats to enhance absorption, as astaxanthin is a fat-soluble nutrient. Or take as directed by a healthcare professional. Store in a cool and dry place.

Caution:

Individuals with medical conditions should consult a healthcare professional before using any dietary supplements.

🌟Who is this suitable for?
- Adults who spend long hours in front of screens and experience eye strain or fatigue
- Adults interested in supporting skin elasticity and moisture
- Adults looking for an antioxidant with evidence in eye tissue specifically, not just general blood markers
- Vegans and vegetarians, given the vegetable capsule format and algae-derived source
- Adults who prefer a dose grounded in a specific dose-finding study

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why 6mg specifically?
A: A dose-finding study in healthy volunteers found that 6mg per day was the level at which astaxanthin's effects on eye accommodation and eye strain became consistent. We built this product's single-capsule dose around that finding, with the label's 1 to 2 capsule range giving you the option to go higher.

Q: Does this replace sunscreen or treat skin conditions?
A: No. The research we cite shows oral astaxanthin was associated with improvements in skin moisture, elasticity, and in some trials wrinkle depth, over 6 or more weeks. It does not provide SPF protection, and it isn't a treatment for any diagnosed skin condition.

Q: Will this fix my eye strain from screen time?
A: The research we reference found improvements in eye accommodation and subjective eye strain symptoms in screen-heavy workers taking astaxanthin, though at a slightly lower dose 5mg. We'd call this supportive evidence for eye comfort during heavy screen use, not a guaranteed fix.

Q: How is this different from astaxanthin from krill or salmon?
A: Haematococcus pluvialis algae is the most studied source of astaxanthin in human research, including all the trials referenced in this brief. It's also naturally vegan, unlike krill-derived astaxanthin.

Q: Can I take this with my other Estalife supplements?
A: Astaxanthin is fat-soluble and generally well tolerated alongside other supplements. If you're taking several fat-soluble nutrients together, it's worth mentioning your full supplement list to a healthcare professional.
