The deficiency most women in Singapore don't know they have
Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency globally, and it is widespread in Singapore. According to a survey by Sata CommHealth, almost half of women in Singapore could have an iron deficiency and are unaware of it. More than half of pregnant Singapore women are iron deficient during the late phases of pregnancy. The Health Promotion Board recommends 18mg of iron daily for women aged 18–59.

The symptoms are easy to dismiss — persistent fatigue, difficulty concentrating, hair loss, brittle nails, and breathlessness during light activity. Many women live with low iron for months or years before connecting it to a nutritional gap.

What most people don't realise is that the form of iron in a supplement determines two things: how much actually gets absorbed, and how well it is tolerated. Conventional iron supplements — particularly ferrous sulfate, the standard in most pharmacy products — cause significant gastrointestinal side effects in a substantial proportion of users.A systematic review and meta-analysis of 43 randomised controlled trials found that people taking ferrous sulfate were more than twice as likely to experience GI side effects compared to those on placebo (Tolkien et al., PLoS One, 2015).

Ferrous Bisglycinate is a chelated form of iron — iron bound to two glycine molecules. This structure protects the iron through the acidic stomach environment and allows it to be absorbed via amino acid transport pathways in the small intestine. The result is meaningfully better tolerability and, in iron-deficient individuals, higher absorption.

What you get per serving

Iron (from 75mg Ferrous Bisglycinate, 100% Chelated) | 15mg elemental iron | 83% Daily Value
Vitamin C (as Ascorbic Acid) | 60mg | 67% Daily Value
Serving size: 1 Vegetable Capsule | Servings per container: 60 | Supply: 60 days | Vegan | Made in Singapore

The 15mg elemental iron per capsule provides 79% of the Health Promotion Board's recommended daily intake for women aged 18–59. This supplement is designed to bridge a dietary gap alongside a balanced diet — not to serve as a sole iron source or a treatment for diagnosed iron deficiency anaemia without medical supervision.

Why Ferrous Bisglycinate and why it is paired with Vitamin C
The iron form

Ferrous bisglycinate has been demonstrated in human clinical trials to have higher bioavailability and absorption compared to conventional iron salts including ferrous sulfate and ferrous fumarate, while also resulting in improved oral tolerability. In a direct comparison study, both forms showed equivalent therapeutic efficiency at similar doses, but gastrointestinal side effects were significantly lower with ferrous bisglycinate — 21% versus 37% for ferrous sulfate.

One important nuance to state clearly: the bioavailability advantage of ferrous bisglycinate is most pronounced in iron-deficient individuals. The body regulates iron absorption via hepcidin — when iron stores are adequate, absorption from all forms is reduced automatically. This supplement is for adults with confirmed or suspected iron deficiency, not for healthy adults with normal iron levels.

The Vitamin C addition
Vitamin C as Ascorbic Acid at 60mg is included because it is one of the best-established enhancers of non-heme iron absorption. Ascorbic acid helps keep dietary iron soluble and available for uptake in the gut, and supports the absorption of non-heme iron consumed in meals alongside this supplement. Including it in the same capsule removes the need to time a separate Vitamin C dose around meals.

Key Benefits

Supports healthy red blood cell production
Iron is an essential component of haemoglobin — the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to every tissue in the body. Inadequate iron directly reduces haemoglobin synthesis, leading to reduced oxygen delivery and the fatigue and weakness associated with iron deficiency.

Supports energy levels
Iron plays a role in cellular energy metabolism beyond haemoglobin. Iron-containing enzymes in the mitochondria are involved in ATP production. Low iron status — even before anaemia develops — is associated with reduced physical energy and impaired concentration.

Supports immune system health
Iron is required for the proliferation and maturation of immune cells, particularly lymphocytes. Iron deficiency impairs the body's immune response, which is one reason chronically low iron is associated with increased susceptibility to infection.

Directions of Use
Take 1 capsule daily after any meal. Or take as directed by a healthcare professional. Store in a cool and dry place.

Caution: Individuals with medical conditions should consult a healthcare professional before use. If you are pregnant, consult your doctor before use.

Important: Do not take iron at the same time as calcium supplements, antacids, dairy, tea, or coffee — these significantly reduce iron absorption. Space them at least 2 hours apart.

Who is this suitable for?
  • Women of reproductive age with heavy menstrual periods and associated monthly iron loss
  • Pregnant women or those trying to conceive — always under doctor supervision, as requirements increase significantly during pregnancy
  • Adults on plant-based or vegan diets, where non-heme iron from food is less bioavailable
  • Individuals whose blood test has shown low ferritin or haemoglobin
  • Those who have tried conventional iron supplements but stopped due to constipation, nausea, or stomach cramping

Why Estalife?
This formula uses 100% Ferrous Bisglycinate — not ferrous sulfate. At 15mg elemental iron per capsule with Vitamin C included at absorption-enhancing levels, it is a well-considered daily maintenance formula for iron-deficient adults. Made in our own NSF GMP-certified factory in Ang Mo Kio, Singapore. No middlemen. Sold directly to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why only 15mg when many iron supplements provide 30–60mg?
Higher doses of ferrous sulfate are partly needed to compensate for poor absorption and high dropout rates from side effects. Ferrous bisglycinate is significantly more bioavailable, meaning a lower dose achieves adequate iron delivery with substantially fewer gastrointestinal complaints. 15mg is a sensible daily maintenance dose for most iron-deficient adults who are not severely anaemic. For diagnosed iron deficiency anaemia requiring therapeutic correction, dosing should be guided by a doctor.

Do I need to take this with food?
Yes — taking iron after a meal reduces nausea risk. Note that calcium-rich foods, dairy, tea, and coffee inhibit non-heme iron absorption. For best results, take after a light meal that does not include these.

Can I take this alongside Estalife Calcium Glycinate?
Not at the same time. Calcium and iron compete for absorption. Take them at least 2 hours apart — for example, Iron Glycinate after breakfast and Calcium Glycinate after dinner.

How long before I see a difference?
Red blood cell turnover takes approximately 3 months. Most people with iron deficiency notice improvements in energy and concentration within 4–8 weeks of consistent daily supplementation. Full replenishment of iron stores typically takes 3–6 months depending on the severity of deficiency.

Is this suitable during pregnancy?
Iron requirements increase significantly during pregnancy. Ferrous bisglycinate has been studied in pregnancy and shows good tolerability. However, iron supplementation during pregnancy should always be under a doctor's supervision so that haemoglobin and ferritin levels can be properly monitored.

Is this vegan?
Yes. The capsule is a vegetable capsule and all ingredients are vegan.
